Las Vegas | The Night Out

Las Vegas | The Night Out

An underground trip, a journey across the desert, the arrival in Las Vegas, a series of competitive events, a night of golf, a lazy river, and some familiar coffee later, it was time to go out. This, would be the classic bachelor party night. Our venue of choice? The Marquee.

If you attended a U.S. university with Greek life and “thirsty Thursdays,” then chances are that you are familiar with the scene. Men wearing button-downs that they would otherwise normally not wear, women wearing formfitting outfits that beckon pneumonia on any given night, and an overflow of overpriced beverages, including water — specially water. Add a secret ingredient, and it’s a recipe for legendary night. That ingredient of course, is friends.

In just about any other context, it would be an undesirable situation. A hot room filled with sweaty people, with barely any space to navigate your way through the masses, music so loud that you know you won’t be able to hear well upon leaving, and did I mention overpriced water? It’s worth mentioning again, the price of water at a club is criminal. So why then was this such a fun night? The same reason why a house party is fun, friends — and these were not just any friends. I cannot emphasize enough the quality and caliber of people that I was privileged to celebrate with during this weekend.

After a long, and I mean long, night of jubilant raging, we were depleted. More importantly, we were famished. How then, did we replenish our reservoir? With Italy’s greatest culinary gift to the world, pizza. To our delight, we found a (somewhat) hidden New York-style pizzeria just a floor below. Unfortunately, there was a long line, the length of which was only rivaled by our need for sustenance.

One eternity later, entered ‘za. Do you see that white slice on the top left section? That’s my slice. The same slice that would go on to keep me up at night at the disheartening thought of knowing that an additional slice would be unattainable in Los Angeles. It was an incredible slice — the likes of which I have only found in New York.

This night was indeed, legendary. It would go on to be the last hurrah with the best man, as a bachelor. In just days he would join me in the married men club. Married men society? Either way, it was an honor raging and munching with you, brother.

Las Vegas | Topgolf

Las Vegas | Topgolf

Still on the same Friday I arrived in Vegas for the Best Man’s Bachelor Party, and after a series of competitive sport events at MGM’s Level Up, we made our way to MGM’s Topgolf for even more athletic fun.

Topgolf is an indoor elevated platform from which players golf into targets below. Imagine a frat guy thinking: “What if we combine golf with a bowling alley and serve beer!?” That’s effectively Topgolf — and it’s awesome!

After ordering an overpriced pitcher and some nachos, we proceeded to spend the next couple of hours swinging clubs with all of our strength and virtually no skill. We may not have a career in professional golf ahead of us, but we sure had fun playing!

We swung and swung until the sun went down, and then we swung some more. In fact, we swung so much that — unbeknownst to me — my shoulder would be sore the following day.

Suddenly, the darkness of night had descended upon us and the bright lights made their debut. But this night we would rest for the following we might not. Exhausted and under the influence of a good time, we headed back to the room.

Tell me, have you ever been to Topgolf? Have you ever golfed in general? What about mini-golf?

Las Vegas | Level Up

Las Vegas | Level Up

After arriving in Las Vegas for the Best Man’s Bachelor Party, we dropped off our luggage at our room in the MGM hotel. Our first stop of the day was a next-level arcade within the MGM aptly named, Level Up.

Before I proceed to describe the libation-filled events of the weekend, and for those readers under the age of 21 (in the United States), I would like to state clearly that I do not endorse underage drinking. In fact, I myself did not begin drinking until around 23 — needless to say, in moderation. Frankly, it took me a while to acquire the taste for it. That said, I do not think alcohol is inherently bad. If it was, I don’t think Jesus would have turned water into wine. The abusive consumption of alcohol on the other hand, well that can be problematic. In conclusion, drink responsibly. Now back to our story.

Level Up, a sports-themed arcade, could not have been a more appropriate way of inaugurating the Best Man’s bachelor party. He has always been among the most athletic of us, and to this day, remains the most fit. I like to think it’s genetics, and to an extent I’m sure it is, but credit where credit’s due. The man loves sports! For that reason, Level Up was perfect!

Appropriately, the first priority was to acquire beverages and ensure that the man of the hour was never empty-handed. Upon securing some Blue Moon tallboys (that would be 24oz cans for those international readers), we began with a classic sport, beer pong.

═════ 1. Beer Pong ═════

Our first competition was all about hand-eye coordination — reminiscent of our high school tennis days. A game designed to intoxicate you, and a classic at just about every fraternity in America, Beer Pong is generally guaranteed to yield a fun competitive time. In this case, there was an emphasis on competitive. Cup after cup, we competed fiercely, and after 2 rounds, we were tied leaving the 3rd game for another time.

═════ 2. Basketball ═════

The second sport of the afternoon was actually the Best Man’s favorite sport, Basketball. This is where we deviate. While he is a talented player, and actually made the team back in the day, I could not play to save my life. I love it, I’m just not that good at it.

═════ 3. Billiards ═════

Moving on to sport No. 3, billiards! Fortunately, I am mildly skilled at billiards (or pool). However, after a few drinks, it is less about skill and more about luck. Either way, a fun time — that is, until your teammate makes the 8 Ball ahead of time. That’s ok though, the night was young and we would have plenty of opportunities to redeem ourselves.

═════ 4. Hockey ═════

Lastly, Level Up has a version of foosball that I had never seen before, a Hockey foosball. This sport had somewhat of a steep learning curve, but once I got the hang of it, it became my personal favorite. At this point, competition had turned into camaraderie, and we now played for the fun of it.

═════ 5. Pizza ═════

Pizza is not a sport — I think. But it is a fantastic way to restore some sobriety after an afternoon of endless libations. As such, we headed to a pizzeria for a slice of ‘za. The soon-to-be groom approved with a 2 Thumbs Up rating.

MGM’s Level Up was a success! We were able to relive our competitive days without the stress of making it to finals. We competed, we consumed libations, and we had a fun time — and this was just the first stop. The day would resume with, you guessed it, more sports. Coming up next, Topgolf.

Tell me, are you a competitive person? Have you ever played beer pong? What do you think of drinking alcohol and what role does it play in your country’s culture?

The Bachelor Party: Johnny Rockets

The Bachelor Party: Johnny Rockets

On our way toward the last uber of the night, we stumbled upon a Johnny Rockets that would become the last stop of the night — the final chapter of our bachelor party saga. Why? Because, what better way to wrap up an epic night of libations, libations, sustenance, and libations, than with, libations!? More innocent libations this time: Milkshakes!

It was the middle of the night and we were among the only customers in this signature 1950’s-themed restaurant. Exhausted and technically under the influence, we ordered milkshakes and fries. We reminisced, conversed, and then rested in the comfort of silence. It was a moment of bliss that concluded the last night out with the gents — as a bachelor.

We took our shakes to-go, and descended onto the Walk of Fame to hail our ride. It occurs to me that there I stood, on a Los Angeles landmark, and at that moment it meant nothing to me. It was the gents by my side that meant, everything. We could have spent the entire night at my apartment and it would have still been the best of bachelor parties — because I have the best of friends. That, is what truly made this night, legendary.

Tell me, where would you go for your bachelor party? Would you rather indulge in the staples or think outside the box? What matters more to you, the destination, or the people with whom you share the adventure?

The Bachelor Party: Dave & Buster’s

The Bachelor Party: Dave & Buster’s

Hot dogs consumed, we were back to — you guessed it — libations! Indeed, the first place we headed to was the bar, and yet, we all retained our mental faculties. Perhaps it was all of the pizza we ate during the preface to our night, perhaps it was Pink’s, but we all held our liquor down through the fourth stop.

Upon securing a tall glass of Blue Moon on tap, the gents and I proceeded to undertake a series of competitive challenges throughout the arena. Ranging from basketball, baseball, and 4-way air-hockey, to a type of beer pong game, arcade Mario Kart, and even a fully immersive Jurassic World VR vehicle-machine, Dave & Buster’s was an absolute home run of testosterone-induced, exciting, brotherly fun!

As we wrapped up our time at this next-level arcade, we had to redeem our tickets. However, selecting a prize was a challenge in itself. Naturally, the gents wanted me to choose a ridiculous necklace to secretly wear during the wedding. Unfortunately for them, I was nowhere near intoxicated enough to agree to such nonsense. Instead, I choose a prize worthy of a champion, one of elegance, one that commands respect: a stuffed toy — and gummy bears.

The night was coming to a close. The bachelor party had been, by all intents and purposes, a resounding success! We departed the premises and headed downstairs towards the Walk of Fame, and just at that moment, we decided the night was not quite over yet.

Tell me, when was the last time you went to an arcade? Would you rather play sports or video games? Are you a competitive player?

The Bachelor Party: Pink’s Hot Dogs

The Bachelor Party: Pink’s Hot Dogs

As the night descended upon us, and several libations in from both Melrose Umbrella Co. and Antonio’s Restaurant, the gents and I headed for a signature LA bite just around the corner: Pink’s Hot Dogs! “A Hollywood legend since 1939” — according to their slogan — Pink’s has been a favorite of mine since my UCLA days.

Pink’s also holds a special place in my heart, as it is one of the few places I took my soon-to-be wife on a pseudo date several years before I even started courting her — although I am not sure the gents knew that.

Pink’s is the place to get an awesome hot dog in Los Angeles. Known for their never-ending long line, unique creations, and of course, flavor-packed hot dogs, Pink’s offers Hollywood-themed entrees beyond your average chili cheese dog. Think hot dog with guac, jalapeños, bacon, mushrooms, grilled pastrami, nacho cheese, or all of the above. Popular favorites include the Giant 12″ Jalapeño dog, the Brando dog, and the Lord of the Rings dog — which is topped with onion rings.

They also have seasonal creations often named after famous actors and movies, including my choice for the night, the La La Land dog. The reason for it, part of La La Land was filmed at our wedding venue — a fact that I discovered after we had selected Orcutt Ranch as our venue! La La Land, besides being an amazing movie (that I got to see in theaters with the wife-elect) and providing a great fun fact for our venue, also inspires a delicious hot dog!

Only now do I realize that I should have taken a picture of my La La Land dog. Alas, I was too distracted having an awesome time with the gents that I devoured my hot dog before I even had a chance. The best I could do was take a picture of their menu — unfortunately not all seasonal creations are listed.

Pink’s, despite the lack of libations, was my favorite stop of the night thus far! My friends know me rather well! That or they lucked out in choosing where to take me. We spent some time in the backyard area reminiscing about our days in high school and college, enjoying our hot dogs, and because I am fond of spice, eating pepperoncini. Before I knew it, we were on another uber on our way to the fourth destination of the night.

Tell me, have you ever had this type of hot dog? What do you like on your hot dog? Do you have a tolerance for spice?

The Bachelor Party: Antonio’s Restaurant

The Bachelor Party: Antonio’s Restaurant

A few libations in, the gents and I left our table at Melrose Umbrella Co., and headed right across the street for the second stop of the night: Antonio’s Restaurant. I think the guys somehow figured out that I like chandeliers because we were now at two for two!

The first thing we noticed upon entering Antonio’s was an elderly man sitting in the corner of the narrow reception area, who welcomed us before a server directed us to our booth. Slightly confused by our introduction to the restaurant, it took us a minute to realize that that must have been Antonio! We then received our menus and saw the image of the same man who welcomed us — decades younger. It was inspiring!

I think the goal was to get Mexican food (perhaps a burrito) but instead had: beer! Specifically, we had Modelos. For someone who once spent the better half of a decade south of the border, and presently lives in Los Angeles, I’m actually not sure I had ever had a Modelo before. It was alright, bread-like. We also had chips and salsa.

Half-way through our conversation, surprise! My college roommate joined us! I was honored that my fraternity brother made the 3-hour trip to Hollywood for me. Having true friends who are there for you even after several years of having had parted ways, is one of the best things in life. Without a doubt, everyone’s presence at the table this night was the greatest present I could have received.

Once the bachelor party crew had been fully assembled, we finished our beers, and decided to move on to stop number three for some authentic LA hot dogs.

Tell me, do you like Mexican food? If you had to choose, would you rather have a burrito or a hot dog? How far would you drive to go see a friend?
